Varicose Veins Treatment

Varicose veins are veins that are in the superficial compartment of the leg that have become enlarged, swollen, twisted, and/or bulging due to venous reflux disease. The visible veins can be many colors but are most commonly red, blue or flesh-toned. The bulging veins most often appear on the thighs, back of the calves, and the inside of the legs.

Pregnant women may experience varicose veins in the vaginal, pelvic and buttocks area. When these veins appear they may indicate an issue of venous reflux disease in the legs or may be a symptom of a pelvic venous issue.  At Precision VIR, our doctors will take the time to answer all of your questions related to varicose veins and vein care during pregnancy as well as how to prevent varicose veins during pregnancy and beyond.

Causes of Varicose Veins:

Varicose veinsVaricose veins are caused by malfunction and damage of the valves in veins of the lower half of the body. As a result of the damaged valves, blood flows forwards but also backwards, in the wrong direction (reflux). This reversal of flow which leads to pooling of backed-up blood, which then causes the veins to bulge, stretch and enlarge.

  • Genetics:  play a major role in the development of varicose veins.
  • Hormonal changes and pregnancy: a big factor as to why women are more prone to get varicose veins than men.
  • Age: vein and valve function may be deranged over time.
  • Weight: being overweight can increase venous pressure in the legs and lower half of the body.
  • Standing or sitting for long periods

F.A.Q.

What is sclerotherapy?
A chemical injection, such as a saline or detergent solution, is injected into a vein causing it to “spasm” or close up. Other veins then take over its work.
What is ambulatory phlebectomy?
As with sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy is a surgical procedure for treating surface veins in which multiple small incisions are made along a varicose vein, and it is “fished out” of the leg using surgical hooks or forceps. The procedure is done under local or regional anesthesia, in an operating room or an office.
What is vein stripping?
If the source of the reverse blood flow is due to damaged valves in the saphenous vein, the vein may be removed by a surgical procedure known as vein stripping.
How is the ClosureFast procedure different from vein stripping?
During a stripping procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in your groin and ties off the vein, after which a stripper tool is threaded through the saphenous vein and used to pull the vein out of your leg through a second incision just above your calf. In the ClosureFast procedure, there is no need for groin surgery. Instead, the vein remains in place and is closed using a special (Closure) catheter inserted through a small puncture. Vein stripping is usually performed in an operating room, under a general anesthetic, while the ClosureFast procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, typically using local or regional anesthesia.
Does health insurance pay for varicose vein treatment?
Health insurance coverage varies by provider and policy. However most health insurance policies will pay for varicose vein treatment depending on a few conditions. First, most policies require abnormal blood flow in the veins that are evaluated by a Duplex vascular ultrasound. This test is non-invasive (no needles). Next, it depends on the severity of disease. If the patient has pain from the varicose veins not controlled by conservative therapy (including compression stockings, exercise, weight loss if necessary and leg elevation) or has skin changes due to the varicose veins (including a reddish rash known as venous eczema, dark skin around the ankles or ulceration) then insurance is more likely to cover the treatment. If the varicose veins are only unsightly and don’t cause any physical problems, this is a cosmetic issue and is not covered by health insurance. We will work with your insurance company to determine if your treatment can be covered.
