Venous Stasis Dermatitis

Venous Stasis Dermatitis is a Result of Venous Hypertension in the Legs

Venous stasis dermatitis is a manifestation of advanced vein disease that affects the skin in the lower leg. It is commonly misdiagnosed with patients potentially going years without identification of the true cause; underlying vein disease. Venous stasis dermatitis is a result of venous hypertension in the legs.

Elevated venous pressures in the legs causes the veins to leak fluid and blood into surrounding tissues. The result is that the skin becomes discolored and itchy. There is subsequent skin break down and deterioration. The skin often becomes cracked and swollen and can weep fluid which can make the condition worse. This can ultimately lead to the formation of venous stasis ulcers which can be difficult to heal given the underlying conditions. The ulcers are then at risk to become infected.

Some signs of venous stasis dermatitis include:

      • thin skin in lower region of the leg (especially near ankles)
      • itchy, dry, cracked, scaly skin
      • skin discoloration
      • swollen, weepy or crusted areas
      • thickening, leather-like appearance
